Few months ago we wrote about their retail startup incubator that was focused primarily on VR. Now, CNBC journalists dug up Walmart’s own patents that help us see the future of retail through the eyes of the largest brick&mortar retailer. There, we see smart shopping carts, inventory-tracking shelves, drone assistants.
ProjectDynamic Saccadic Redirection by Stony Brook University, Adobe, and NVIDIA What it is A brain hack that directs user movement in VR. Why we like it Walking in VR helmets is still a very clumsy experience. There are many different reasons for that, biggest one being the spatial difference between virtual reality worlds and real premises where most of experiences take place. Researchers from around the world try to tackle this with different brain hacking approaches. In one of our previous issues, we talked about Simulacrum by the Bartlett School of Architecture, which is a special approach to creating larger than real VR spaces using sophisticated interiors. Today’s example hacks the brain on a lower, more physiological level. The researchers at Stony Brook University, Adobe, and NVIDIA used the so-called saccades, fast eye movements, to invisibly change trajectories of users in VR experiences. This looks very promising, but as any new tech, can be used in both a good way, like creating exciting VR experiences, and in a bad way, becoming a prototype for Matrix-like dystopia.
